Charlie and Mama Kyna by Diana Rumjahn

Charlie and Mama KynaCharlie and Mama Kyna by award-winning filmmaker Diana Rumjahn, is a delightful story of three friends who learn about love, friendship, and the pleasures of going home.

Charlie is a little frog who accidentally broke his mother’s favorite vase and runs away from home. He meets Leo, the lion and Joe, the giraffe, outside of Mrs. Cupcake’s Bakery and they become fast friends, living in an orange tent outside the bakery.  But Charlie misses his mother and soon decides to head home.  Saddened at the thought of losing his new friends, Charlie invites Leo and Joe to join him on the journey home.  Once they arrive at the little white cottage with the big red steps, Mama Kyna is happy to see Charlie and his new friends; so happy that she throws them a big party.  Charlie, Leo and Joe help Mama Kyna around the house and they make lots of new friends, which makes Charlie decide that he’ll never run away from home again.

Charlie and Mama Kyna is an adorable story.  Based upon Rumjahn’s film, Going Home, this story will delight young readers and remind them of the comforts of home.  Children also learn about friendship and being loved, which makes this an excellent story for any occasion.

Rumjahn’s illustrations are vibrant and colorful, the perfect compliment to such a charming story.  I hope we see more from this talented author, illustrator and filmmaker.
