That’s My Mommy! and That’s My Daddy! by Ann Hodgman

mommy

Two very sweet books that celebrate parents come from Ann Hodgman. In That’s My Mommy! animals from kittens to ducklings to joeys and more, talk about the wonderful things their mommies do. Mommy makes the kitten feel better. Duckling’s mommy makes him feel brave. Joey’s mommy reads to him every day. With charming and lovable illustrations by Laura Logan, this book is bound to be a hit.

That’s My Daddy! finds a calf who likes how his daddy can reach way up high. Mouse’s daddy is the strongest in the world. Puppy’s daddy can find anything that gets lost. With less than ten words on each page, Hodgman captures the essence of what it means to be a daddy to little ones. Laura Logan lends her talents to this book as well. I hope these two work together again, as they create magical, charming stories.

These padded board books are perfect for preschoolers. Their sturdy construction means they’ll stand up to multiple reads (and we all know how much kids love to read and read again their favorite books). The short sentences will allow for quick memorization of the story, and will then help youngsters as they transition to being able to read alone. Hodgman proves here that you don’t have to say a lot to create touching and meaningful books for parents and children to share together. And at only $8.95 each, they are a great value.

Highly recommended.

This Little Piggy: And Other Favorite Action Rhymes Illustrated by Hannah Wood

If you and your preschooler are ready for some playtime, pick up a copy of This Little Piggy: And Other Favorite Action Rhymes from tiger tales.

In this lively collection of traditional fingerplays and action verses, youngsters can join in the singing, tickling, wiggling, and clapping with more than fifteen favorite laptime rhymes.  From “Pat-a-Cake” to “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”, and from “Here is the Church” to “Five Little Monkeys”, your child will enjoy playing along and singing along right with you.

I am a huge fan of interactive reading materials. That’s why I have always enjoyed The Crypto-Capers series by Renee Hand. One of the best ways I know how to get kids interested in reading at a young age is by making reading fun. That’s exactly what This Little Piggy does.

I wasn’t familiar with the artwork of Hannah Wood until this book. Now I’m going to search for more books that she’s illustrated. Her characters are cute, charming, and sometimes funny. The spiders are playful and fuzzy looking, the fingers on the hand for “Where is Thumbkin?” have faces, and there are five adorable little monkeys dressed in pajamas jumping on the bed. I swear the doctor told them not to do that. 😉

Preschools and homes everywhere will want to own a copy of This Little Piggy: And Other Favorite Action Rhymes.

Are You Ready for Bed? by Jane Johnson

Getting ready for bedtime has never meant such a sweet treat until now. Are You Ready for Bed? by Jane Johnson will help you settle in and settle down with a wonderful story of Little Bunny who just isn’t ready for sleep.  Mrs. Rabbit tries lullabies, bubble baths, and even warm milk, but still Little Bunny would rather enjoy his time with his mother. Once Little Bunny finally falls asleep, Mrs. Rabbit is ready for some peace and quiet.

This is the first book my six-year-old took out of the pile to read. The padded board book with the flocked cover is sure to catch your child’s eye too. Its soft, warm colors have a calming effect, and even I can’t resist touching the flocked bunnies on the cover.

Johnson has put together a sweet bedtime story with Are You Ready for Bed? The poor tired Mommy rabbit is happy to get her youngsters tucked in for the night. But as soon as she starts to drift off into her own dreamland she is awakened by her youngest bunny looking for attention. I can’t tell you how many times that has happened to me over the past several years. Though I don’t think I would be kind enough to give my kids warm bubble baths to calm them down. Aren’t I an ogre? 🙂

Gaby Hansen has provided some of the most charming illustrations for this book. The patchwork quilt, the big puffy chair Mrs. Rabbit reclines in, the adorable picture of Little Bunny hugging Mrs. Rabbit that is found on the cover and inside the book, all of them are so cute and will help little ones think of bedtime.

There is so much to love about this book, you’ll want to make Are You Ready for Bed? by Jane Johnson part of your child’s bedtime ritual.
