Are you a cat lover? Do your children love cats? If so, you’ll want to pick up Shoo Cat, the latest by Shari Lyle-Soffe.
Ethan wants a dog. He has a cat, but they aren’t loyal like dogs. Cats aren’t faithful like dogs and they certainly don’t like water. When Ethan gets a chance to trade his cat for a dog, it’s an adventure he doesn’t expect.
I have a feeling that Shoo Cat by Shari Lyle-Soffe is going to end up being a favorite of mine. Our family has come to know the joy of loving cats, and I can’t believe that there is a dog more loyal than our Tiger, who follows us on our walks through the neighborhood and kills any furry rodent who makes the mistake of putting his paws on our lawn.
The poor cat in Shoo Cat spends his time showing Ethan what a great friend he can be, but the stubborn boy can only think about how great it would be to own a dog. It’s cute to see the interaction between the two—or lack there of, because Ethan is pretty much oblivious to everything the cat is doing until after he gets the coveted dog and sees things differently.
Jack Foster has done a spectacular job illustrating Shoo Cat. Foster has a style that is definitely his own. I could tell right away that he did the artwork on this book, without having to look for his name.
There’s so much to love about Shoo Cat that your children will wear these pages out from reading the book so often. You’ll probably enjoy reading it too. It’s truly a book for cat lovers everywhere.

Here’s a book that both you and the kids will enjoy. Poodle & Doodle by Donna Shepherd tells the story of a prissy poodle that is all upset when her owner brings home a mangy mutt to join the family. Wasn’t she dog enough? Especially when Leah has brought home Scruffy, a large, clumsy and sloppy Labradoodle.
Kids will love following along on this rhyming adventure, made complete with funny and charming illustrations created by Jack Foster. Parents will enjoy the easy way they can teach their young children about acceptance and friendship. And while the characters in this one are dogs, parents could easily relate this story to siblings and the many wonderful quirks brothers and sisters put up with out of love.
Poodle & Doodle will snuggle their way into your child’s heart, just like they did with each other. This is a book that won’t stay on the shelf long because your children will want to read it over and again, just like in our house.
