Freddy and Hoppie go to school, but numbers are smooshed together, words blur, and the wrong answers make classmates snicker. After a week, Freddy knows it’s time to tell his mom what’s going on, but admitting you need help can be hard.

Freddy, Hoppie and the Eyeglasses by Michelle Nott is an adorable story about a young boy opening up to his mother about an ongoing problem with his eyes. His imaginary friend helps him, but at some point Freddy must work up the courage to share what he is dealing with so he can get better. This story will touch the heart and make it easier for young people who might be struggling with vision problems to open up and to have some idea of what to expect. The ending is so sweet. The story is made better by the colorful and fun artwork of Robert Lee Beers. From facial expressions, to background details, to that silly and cute little Hoppie frog, the illustrations are the perfect complement to a wonderful story. I look forward to more books from Michelle Nott soon.

Freddy, Hoppie and the Eyeglasses by Michelle Nott is a great way to help your child adjust his or her very first pair of glasses.

Freddy runs late for school, his watch is all blurry, and sometimes his wild answers make his classmates laugh. Using his imaginary friend, Hoppie, Freddy is able to help his mother understand what is going on so she can help.

This adorable and funny book tackles an important subject. Sometimes kids don’t want to tell their parents they can’t see the board or the word in a book as clearly as they used to. That can be a frightening thing. Freddy, Hoppie and the Eyeglasses will not only help young people understand it’s okay to share these kinds of problems with their parents; it also shows them how simple an eye exam and getting glasses can be.

The vivid colors in Robert Lee Beers’ artwork capture your attention–especially the green. There were a lot of nice background details in these pictures: the tiny apples on the tree outside of the school, the student of the month poster in Freddy’s classroom, and the eye chart in Dr. Virens’ office.

This book is a great blend of education and entertainment.

Eating healthy just got a lot funnier with Green Gooey Goop by Anna C. Morrison.

In this rhyming story, a girl is served a different kind of meal by her mother who is sharing with her the importance of eating all those green fruits and vegetables. This green gooey goop is whirled up and served in a huge cup with hilarious results.

What a blast this book is. Morrison definitely knows what will relate well to children. I am pretty sure those healthy smoothies look like “green gooey goop” to most youngsters. With her zany creativity, the author is able to highlight all those healthy foods, while acknowledging how kids could feel when presented with such a concoction.

The artwork of Alexander Morris is perfect for Green Gooey Goop. The wavy lines, the wide-eyed expressive faces, and his vibrant mix of colors is the perfect complement to Morrison’s entertaining story.

Kids will eat this one up!

Anna C. Morrison is an author of children’s books, including Silly Moments and Green Gooey Goop, with many more to follow. She is also an adjunct professor for multiple colleges and universities, both face-to-face and online. While she instructs various levels of English composition, she also teaches classes on literature, film, feature writing, and technical writing, among others. In addition, she has worked with Adapt Courseware as a writing consultant on three video course projects, including college skills and composition. Anna received her MFA in Writing from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, and her BA in English, Creative Writing, from California State University, San Bernardino. Anna is an active member of SCBWI and is available for book signings. She lives in Southern California with her family and pets.

Jekyll Says…Good Deeds Cats Do, That You Should Too! By D.C. Blackbird

Jekyll the cat has a book full of advice for kids of any age in Jekyll Says…Good Deeds Cats Do, That You Should Too! by D.C. Blackbird.

From waking up happy to getting plenty of rest, from eating healthy meals to dressing your best, and from being a hard worker to being proud of who you are, this book is filled with tons of advice. Inspired by the real life Jekyll, D.C. Blackbird immortalized his beloved pet in a rhyming book that is helpful and fun.

Young children will enjoy the flow of the prose as they move from section to section. The story is so sweet and the rhymes flow so well, it’s possible they will forget they are learning anything. But learn they shall the importance of being clean and being someone’s hero, and so many other things. Adults could heed Jekyll’s advice too.

While I like that this book has wide appeal, I wonder if it would be better to have two different series going:  one for kids and one for adults. Why would a child think about dressing his best? While being a hard worker is important, arriving early and not being lazy might be concepts that are beyond a young child’s comprehension. Defending the helpless is something they won’t understand much at all, and children are the helpless in many situations.  

The illustrations provided by Christine P. Flores are fabulous. Filled with bright colors and humor, they capture exactly who I felt Jekyll was as I read the book.

I would love to read more books in this series.

Ian’s New Potty by Pauline Oud

From the author/illustrator of Going to the Beach with Lily and Milo comes an encouraging book to help make potty training easier.

Ian is a big boy now. His mom buys him a new potty and big boy underpants. Ian is eager to use his new potty, but the pee doesn’t come right away. He runs off to play and soon feels a funny feeling in his tummy. The floor and his new boy underpants get all wet. At dinner time he gets that funny feeling in his tummy again. Maybe this is his chance to use his new potty.

Ian’s New Potty by Pauline Oud is definitely a book you’ll want around if you’re planning to get your child ready to transition out of diapers. With simple language Ian’s story will encourage your youngster and let him know what he’s feeling and doing is okay. He’ll see the excitement on Ian’s face as he gets to use his new potty for the first time and helps Mommy clean up afterwards.

A nice touch is Ian’s stuffed rabbit named Flap, who Ian speaks to throughout the story. After using his potty, Ian even tells Flap that he’s a big boy now and he’s ready to play.

I would recommend Ian’s New Potty to any family I knew was working on potty training.
