Simon’s Skin by Nidhi Kamra

Simon’s Skin by Nidhi Kamra teaches is a funny way to teach youngsters to be comfortable in their own skin.

Simon thinks his skin is boring. So, he tries on a variety of different skins. He quickly comes to a surprising conclusion.

This is such a neat book. Between the catchy text and the vibrant artwork, children are bound to be thrilled with it. Though I try not to make many comparisons to other books, Simon’s Skinย reminds me of a modernย I Want to Be Somebody New!ย by Robert Lopshire. Artist Diane Brown’s colorful artwork will definitely make youngsters want to pick up the book, but it is Kamra’s engaging story that will keep them turning the pages. Having read books from Kamra before, I knew this would be a good one. This topic is also timely, because it teaches kids to be comfortable in their own skin.

A silly story with a good lesson hidden inside is what you’ll find in Simon’s Skin.

The Great Toy Revolt by Lance K. Ewing

A fun way to encourage reading and play time that doesn’t involve sitting in front of a screen has just arrived with The Great Toy Revolt by Lance K. Ewing.

In this zany story, neglected toys send three brothers notes about being neglected. They hope to sway the brothers into turning in their electronic devices for books and their older toys they used to enjoy playing with.

The Great Toy Revoltย is a really cute story with colorful artwork by Justin Green. A quick read, parents could use this story to encourage youngsters to swap out screen time for reading, enjoying time outside, creating music, or just having fun without devices. It sure beats lecturing them about it.

Jonah: The Fearful Prophet by Janice D. Green

A moving retelling of the story of Jonah can be found inย Jonah: The Fearful Prophetย by Janice D. Green.

The story of Jonah may be one of the most well-known in the Bible. God instructs Jonah to go to the evil city of Nineveh. Instead, Jonah disobeys God and takes a ship heading in the opposite direction, which leads to unfortunate circumstances. Eventually, Jonah obeys God, but he’s not happy when Nineveh is spared. It seems Jonah still has some learning to do. Thankfully, God is patient.

It just so happens that we are studying the book of Jonah in Bible study, which reminded me of this new book by Green.ย Some children’s books that share the story of Jonah stop too early. They end with Jonah obeying God and the town of Nineveh being spared from destruction, which tells only part of Jonah’s tale.ย Green brings readers through what happens after Nineveh is spared–how God patiently taught Jonah an important lesson.

The colorful artwork by Kimberly Merritt is the perfect complement to Green’s story. It captures the raging waters, the angry sailors, Jonah praying while in the belly of the whale, his walk through Nineveh and many other aspects of what happened to Jonah. I hope these two work together on future books.

Jonah: The Fearful Prophet also includes discussion questions and activities, which make it perfect for Sunday school or family time. You can also purchase a separate coloring book to accompany the story.

A beautifully told Bible story that children will enjoy over and again is what you’ll find inย Jonah: The Fearful Prophet.

A Bobby-Dazzler of a Pouch! by Janet Halfmann

Award-winning children’s author Janet Halfmann’s latest book, A Bobby-Dazzler of a Pouch!, is a fun and whimsical way to entertain and educate your children about Australian animals and words, friendship, and problem-solving.

Joey, a gray kangaroo, needs to find his way back to his mother’s pouch in the mob. Though he tries and tries, he can’t seem to do it. Then a handful of animal friends pitch in to help him out.

By now, you know I am a fan of Halfmann’s work. All her books entertain and educate in a way that is attractive to young readers. This short story is one that teaches children how to problem-solve and work together to obtain a goal. It is a story about friendship in the wild that touches the heart, even though it is a whimsical story.

The colorful artwork by Abira Das will keep readers turning the pages as much as the story. Lush green, vibrant red, and deep blue contrast so well against the white space and neutral colors of most of the animals.

The story is followed by fun kangaroo facts, Australian words, and a list of Australian animals and plants featured in the story.

So much fun, you and your children will want to read A Bobby-Dazzler of a Pouch!ย over and again.
