Tibetan Tales from the Top of the World by Naomi C. Rose

Come experience the world of Tibet through the simple, yet charming tales told in Tibetan Tales from the Top of the World by Naomi C. Rose.

This delightful collection includes three ancient tales that offer simple wisdom and show us how to live in peace and kindness. In “Prince Jampa’s Surprise”, children read of Prince Jampa, a brave young man who has been misled about the Varasi by years and years of stories telling of their bloodthirsty ways. Thinking the Varasi are out to destroy his people, Prince Jampa leads a war party into battle, only to discover that things might not be as they seem.

“Sonam and the Stolen Cow” shares the the story of Sonam, a young nun who is falsely accused of stealing a cow. Treated poorly by her accusers, when Sonam sees a chance to escape, she runs off. Very hungry, she meets up with a monkey in the woods, who reminds her of a time her cousin was falsely accused for something she did, which leads her on  a path to finally make things right.

The last story in this collection is “Tashi’s Gold”. Tashi is a lazy worker, who spends much of his time napping. When he overhears two men talking about the magical lake loaded with gold, Tashi decides to go to the lake. If he were rich, he wouldn’t need to work on the farm anymore. He meets with the guardian of the lake, who tells him that riches never come from gold, but the greedy Tashi takes some anyway. But Tashi and his family soon discover the meaning behind the guardian’s words.

Each of these tales is told in a lyrical, flowing prose that draws the reader in.  The author has studied Tibetan culture and wisdom since 1994, and her knowledge and passion to share this wisdom is evident right from the very beginning. Rose also provided the stunning illustrations for this book, making Tibetan Tales from the Top of the World a beautiful piece of work. The stories are told in English and Tibetan. There is a Preface from actor Richard Gere and the Dalai Lama provides the Foreword.  Rose’s previous book, Tibetan Tales for Little Buddhas, won a Nautilus Book Award. It will not surprise me if Tibetan Tales from the Top of the World garners her more accolades.

A truly inspirational reading experience awaits you and your child in Tibetan Tales from the Top of the World!

    Zooprise Party by Rebekha Delgado

A delightful and entertaining bilingual story of friendship is waiting to be discovered in Zooprise Party by Rebekha Delgado.

Mori the okapi is celebrating a birthday, but no one seems to care–not even his nozy neighbor, Lito the gerenuk. What do Lito and Elvis the king vulture know that Mori doesn’t?

This is a wonderful book that will be enjoyed by young people (ages 3 – 8) in many parts of the world. Told in English and Spanish, your child will learn about friendship and a variety of interesting animals. The author’s love and knowledge of animals is obvious throughout the book as she assigns human traits to these zoo creatures whom your children will love and adore.

Illustrator Joy Delgado did an excellent job of bringing these characters to life. Her attention to detail and the fun and lighthearted appearance of Mori and friends will be a big hit with young readers. And through most of the pages there is a wild rabbit hopping around. Though not mentioned in the book, I wondered if he/she has a story of his/her own to tell.

The text is large and clear so that children who are reading on their own will have no problem understanding the words. My girls (ages 7 and 5) picked up on the fact that each main character has his own colored text in the story, so that the words “Mori” and “okapi” always appear in purple, “Lito” and “gerenuk” in green, and “Elvis” and “king vulture” in red. This allowed them to relate which animal went with which name easily.

Also available is the Zooprise Party Activity Book, filled with crossword puzzles, color by number pages, search-a-words, and connect the dots, and mazes. There are also coloring pages that ask questions about the book and the back page has bookmarks for your child to cut out and share with friends.

There is also a Teacher’s Guide that will help educators introduce children in Grades K – 3 to a variety of topics that coincide with the book. From Language Arts to Math and Science, this guide will provide educators with many ideas to help children learn about themselves, others, and animals.

You’ll find more activities, crafts, recipes, and animal facts at http://www.laughing-zebra-children-books.com/index.html

Zooprise Party by Rebekha Delgado is a book that should be on every young reader’s bookshelf, though I doubt it will stay there long because they’ll be too busy reading it.

The Frog in the Well by Irene Tsai

The Frog in the WellA beautifully illustrated retelling of a classic Chinese idiom that teaches children about Chinese culture and language is what you’ll find in The Frog in the Well by Irene Tsai.

The frog happily hops into the well and proclaims that he is the smartest frog in the world; after all, he knows everything about the well. But when a sea turtle crawls to the well and tells the frog all about the big, deep, wide and blue ocean, the frog learns a lesson in humility he won’t soon forget.

The story of The Frog in the Well comes alive with vivid illustrations from Pattie Caprio. Told in English and translated into Chinese by Joyce Lin, the reader can appreciate the culture and language of China while learning a valuable life lesson. The Note to Readers and Word List compliment the story and help readers to understand what they find within this 36-page picture book.

With adorable creatures whose personalities shine through from the very start, The Frog in the Well is sure to entertain and educate your young reader.

  • Joey Gonzalez, Great American by Tony Robles

Joey+GonzalezJoey Gonzalez is excited to start the third grade. He’s going to study hard and become a great American. But when Joey and his friends meet their new teacher, Mrs. Glass, Joey finds out he’s not an American at all; he’s a minority and they learn differently. Mrs. Glass assures Joey that he’ll be all right, because Affirmative Action will help him. When Joey returns to school the next day, it’s Mrs. Glass who gets a lesson about Affirmative Action.

Joey Gonzalez, Great American by Tony Robles, is a beautifully illustrated, well-written story of a child standing up for what he believes is right and true. The reader is almost as saddened as Joey when he is treated so cruelly by his teacher, but rejoices when Joey speaks the truth that he holds inside.

Written in English and Spanish, this book is an excellent way to teach young people of all ethnic backgrounds that what makes them who they are cannot be helped or improved by any government policy. As Joey and his friends stand up to Mrs. Glass, the reader will be inspired to achieve his dreams because he knows that hard work and determination will make all the difference.

As a lover of history, I enjoyed Robles sharing how the Spaniards and Africans came to America. And it was wonderful to see the strength and bravery of slaves and the Buffalo Soliders highlighted.

Amazon.com says this is targeted for ages 4 – 8, but my children, who are in this age group, had a hard time grasping the concept of Affirmative Action, and trying to explain a “race card” to them was almost impossible.

Joey Gonzalez, Great American is a powerful story that sheds light on the challenges of living with a controversial American government policy.
