The TRUTH: Diary of a Gusty Tween by Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein

truth

In this updated version of THE TRUTH, My Secret Diary, I’m Ten, I’m Smart and I Know Everything positive psychologist Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein provides a glimpse into two years in the life of a girl starting at ten years old. Told as a series of diary entries, the reader follows the girl as she falls in love for the first time, deals with troubles at home, attempts to fit in with her peers, and watches her body begin to change. As young girls move along through this young journalist’s life, they will be reminded of their inner strength, their talents, and their future potential.

The TRUTH: Diary of a Gusty Tween contains references to modern technology that all tweens and teens use on a regular basis. This is the second update of this book for teens and tweens. I like how Holstein works to stay in touch with her readers and keeps abreast of what is important to them. However, the messages of this book remain the same: you aren’t alone and you are special. Because these messages are so important when reaching out to this age group, I am happy Holstein continues to focus her work here. Bringing up girls to have a healthy image of themselves is vital to future happiness.

Definitely a great book for those ten and up to read alone or with a parent for discussion.

Fearless Joe Dearborne by Lisa Whitney Mitchell

PP-Native-Cover_4475967_Front-Cover2-640x1024

Fearless Joe Dearborne by Lisa Whitney Mitchell is the story of a boy regaining his courage after a near death experience.

After the death of his mother, Joe Dearborne has become known in his community as Fearless Joe. His father, however, feels he’s being reckless. When Joe rushes into a burning house to rescue some puppies, he knows he’s broken the promise he made to his father to stay out of harm’s way. But breaking that promise is soon the least of Joe’s worries.

When the mysterious Mrs. Chill arrives to care for Joe while his dad is away on business, he discovers she will unleash a devious plan that will ruin his family. Can Joe push aside the fears from his near death experience to save them?

What a great book. Mitchell has created a fascinating cast of characters and placed them within the setting of an imaginative, captivating story. After his near death experience, everything Joe has ever known changes. With his father away on business, he’s left to deal with uncovering and stopping Mrs. Chill’s evil plans all by himself, despite now being afraid to do things he never would have thought twice about doing before. It’s great to see Joe’s development through the story. Secondary characters like Aunt P., Mrs. Darcy and Meg add humor and a sense of community.

I easily read this book in one sitting, and would love to see Joe, Aunt P. and others featured in new stories. Fearless Joe Dearborne is a page-turning middle grade novel filled with mystery and adventure. You won’t want to miss this one.

K-9 Cop by Erna Mueller

k9

Put together a sarcastic, arrogant cop and an angry, computer savvy teenager and you get a good idea of what you’re in store for in K-9 Cop: Case #1 – The Dreck Report.

While on a stakeout, a police detective named Spencer Watley meets Justin Andrews, who is often in trouble with Principal Hammersmith. When Spencer is killed in the line of duty, he comes back to life as a dog and is sent to help out Justin’s family. Meanwhile, a group of cyber-killers are on the search for our detective turned pooch because he’s accidentally swallowed a microchip that will allow them to hack into computers and steal millions. While Spencer and Justin continue to butt heads, the Cyber Killers close in, kidnapping them. How will Spencer get them out this mess?

While I found the opening chapters a bit confusing, K-9 Cop is a funny, adventure-filled mystery for tweens and young adults. Spencer’s interactions will leave them in stitches. His comeuppance of returning as a dog and needing to earn entry into heaven will intrigue them. And the touching ending will warm everyone’s heart. Justin has a difficult story all his own, so to see Spencer and Justin connect on any level is rewarding. Though not what one might consider as your typical tween/young adult read, the content and some of the banter definitely places it into this market. I would say you’re looking at 14 and up for this one.

K-9 Cop is a fast-paced story with engaging characters that many will enjoy.

K-9 Cop: Case #1 – The Dreck Report by Erin Mueller (Giveaway)

k9Title: K-9 Cop: Case #1 The Dreck Report
Author: Erna Mueller
Publisher: Erna Mueller
Pages: 220
Genre: YA
Format: Paperback/Kindle

No one thought as highly of Lieutenant Spencer Watley as he did himself. This selfish cop met 14 year-old Justin Andrews during an important stakeout. Determined to nab a group of cyber killers, he wasn’t going to let anything get in his way, especially a smart mouthed teenager like Justin.

After Spencer bids him good riddance, he is killed by the hackers and stands before the gates of heaven. But – what’s this? After a life of putting dangerous criminals behind bars, he’s locked out?

He yells at the angel blocking his entrance, only to find out he needs to go through the J.R.P. program before he can enter. That’s the Jerk Redemption program, otherwise known as sensitivity training boot camp, which to his horror consists of non-stop Oprah and Dr. Phil reruns. Or he can go back to earth and help Justin’s dysfunctional family. Spencer opts for the lesser of two evils, to help Justin.

But the Angel pulls a fast one on Spencer. He can only go back to earth in the body of his K9-Partner. Spencer refuses, but like it or not, Spencer becomes a dog.  He falls back to earth and is slowly morphed into a dog that closely resembles a mop.

And if being a dog wasn’t bad enough, Spencer also swallowed an important microchip his killers need to hack into PC’s and steal millions. Now the criminals are hot on his trail for the only existing microchip that’s logged in his belly.

Justin and Spencer butt heads constantly; both are stubborn and willful, neither one wanting to give an inch. Spencer needs to find out what the killers are up to, so he swallows his pride and forms a bond with the boy. Spencer relays to Justin his past and together with the help of Justin’s girlfriend, Shahla; they discover the hacker’s plans. Spencer has broken down Justin’s reserve and he finally learns the meaning of unselfish love.

But it’s too late, the hackers have captured them.

Can Spencer maul the shins (and other choice areas) of his kidnappers and stop them from their evil plan?

Can a selfish man find a heart?

You bet.  He just has to become a dog first.
