Interview with Jolene Perry, Author of Night Sky

Jolene Perry grew up in Wasilla, Alaska. She graduated from Southern Utah University with a degree in political science and French, which she used to teach math to middle schoolers.

After living in Washington, Utah and Las Vegas, she now resides in Alaska with her husband, and two children. Aside from writing, Jolene sews, plays the guitar, sings when forced, and spends as much time outside as possible.

She is also the author of The Next Door Boys and the upcoming Knee Deep.

Thank you for joining us today, Jolene. Can you please start off by telling us a bit about yourself?

I’m from Alaska where I now live. I have two kids, an unruly cat, and one of those husbands who I like quite a lot. I’m a high school teacher turned writer, and huge lover of books.

When did you first get bit by the writing bug?

In the fall of 2009, I had a random conversation with my husband about imaginations and writing and he said – you should just write some scenes down. Just for fun. For whatever reason, I’d never thought of writing for no real purpose, so I did. 100 pages in, I knew there was more story to tell.

Why did you decide to write stories for the YA market?

I feel like it chose me. My first published book was a college age student, and I assumed they’d market it to adults. They didn’t. And suddenly all my ideas involved teens.

What is your favorite part of writing for this group? What is the greatest challenge?

My favorite part is the newness of everything. I also love how all-encompassing the things teens are passionate about become. The biggest challenge for me is making sure I use language that’s authentic to my character and their age, and I try to stay away from pop culture references, because by the time a book goes to print, the reference might not make sense.

Can you tell us what your latest book is all about?

Night Sky is about Jameson, who I adore, and him simply trying to navigate girls, honestly, and to finish his senior year. I loved to write how he handled his life falling apart around him, starting with losing the girl he loved. And then he meets Sky – this very cool, smooth, Native American girl who has this thing with honesty, all the time, no matter what. And after losing his best friend because of a lack of that, and watching his parents’ marriage fall apart, she becomes a huge part of his life, and how he copes with what’s going on around him. Until . . . well, you’ll have to read the book to find out more about that ;-D

What inspired you to write it?

I wanted to write a story that starts with a bad ending. Jameson wasn’t honest with his friend Sarah about how he felt, and she ended up with someone else. I wanted to know what happened NEXT.

  1. Cheryl, thanks for allowing Jolene to stop by today to share her thoughts on her latest YA release. I think it’s true in fiction and real life – sometimes the person who can help you cope with a difficult situation enters your life at the precise moment you need them.
