The Mouse and the Christmas Cake by Unknown Author

One of the things I like the best about my Kindle is being able to download free books. I don’t often download children’s picture books because mine doesn’t have color, but since it was free I thought I would give it a whirl.

This is a rhyming tale of Nib, a mouse who builds a house in a castle that sits on a Christmas cake. When the family tries cutting into the cake Nib races off and a silly chase ensues.

The Mouse and the Christmas Cake is a cute short narrative poem that may have once delighted young readers, but now would probably be for a slightly older audience. The Kindle file lacks the cover art, but it includes illustrations of Nib, the pussy cat, the family, and the chase. Unlike modern-day illustrations, these are a tiny bit scary.  Both Nib and the cat seem angry, and the young man chasing Nib looks like a cross between Augustus Gloop from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and a troll.

The story ends on a happy note, though, so all is well. If you are nostalgic about stories of old, you might want to download this one.
