Angel Eyes by Dixie Phillips

AngelEyescvr3x100Cherubs Kennedy and Tristan are worried when they hear Prince Emmanuel is going to leave them.  Kennedy hopes they will love Him on Earth.  Tristan reads about Prince Emmanuel’s baptism, and the next time they hear Gabriel’s trumpet, all the cherubs pray for the Prince while he is in the Garden of Gethsemane.  Then horror of horrors, the people on Earth kill Prince Emmanuel and the cherubs are sad.  But their sadness doesn’t last long because in three days the Prince is alive again and all the people now have a way to live with Him in Heaven.  How wonderful it was that He became one of them!

The adorable and colorful cover of Angel Eyes had my young daughter turning the pages the same day it came in the mail.  She actually made up her own angel story before we read the real one–usually a sign that a book will be a big hit here.

Talented author Dixie Phillips’s debut release with Guardian Angel Publishing is a wonderful short story of Christ’s journey to Earth and then back home.  Angel Eyes gives young readers an idea of how the angels might have felt when Jesus came to Earth and was crucified.  Once again, Kim Sponaugle’s beautiful illustrations add much to this story.  The happiness, worry and sadness she is able to relay through her pictures is amazing.

My one challenge with this book is that is covers such a long period of time.  While Phillips handles it well, merely stating, “One day, many years later…” and “Three years after Prince Emmanuel’s baptism..”, the passage of time is difficult for young readers to grasp.   Is the reader able to grasp that the baby at the beginning of the book is the man toward the end of the book, or does the reader believe the people on Earth killed a baby?

Even considering that challenge, my daughter loved Angel Eyes.  The author’s knowledge and years of experience as a pastor’s wife shines through, and she certainly has a way of getting right to the heart of the matter.  I can’t wait to see what comes next from Dixie Phillips!

    1. Hi Cheryl,
Great review! I hope when my book comes out your kids will look at it. It might be to old for them. I’ve got a few younger books, but they haven’t been accepted.

      Hi Dixie,
I’ve been over at The Character Studio. I love Stubby’s song. I can’t wait to see what LeFerna does for “Angel Eyes”. She’s going to write me a song, create an interview and create two character voices for my book “Klutzy Kantor”. I can’t wait to see my characters come alive.
Good luck with “Angel Eyes. It looks precious.
      Blessings,

    2. Thanks J. My other daughter is eight, so perhaps your book would be appropriate for her.

I’ve been out to LeFerna’s site recently too. Stubby’s song is so cute. It’s wonderful that she’s doing a song for your book too. Keep me posted.
